Copper Toxicity Symptoms in Women: What a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis Reveals

My silverware started rusting in the dishwasher.

I'd had it over 25 years and it had never rusted before. Not once. So I had people out to check it, and what I got back was some version of the same thing every time. Oh no, it can't be that. Oh no, you're crazy.

No. I'm not crazy.

But I believed them for a while, because what else do you do. There's something wrong with me, is what I thought.

What Happened to Me

In October of 2023 I put a whole home filtration system in my house. I was going through a detox program at the time, and you want clean water. That's the whole reason. I hired somebody I trusted and we went after the arsenic, and we got it.

What I didn't know is, well. I knew something. I just couldn't put two and two together, and I kept trying.

The water reports told the story eventually. Taking the arsenic out left the water stripped of the minerals that kept it balanced, and water like that turns corrosive. Corrosive water pulls metal off the pipes it runs through. My copper went from 0.006 to 0.466 mg/L over two years, roughly seventy-five times what it started at.

And it stayed under the federal action level the entire time.

That's the part worth understanding, because it's why every person who came to my house told me nothing was wrong. The EPA sets a copper action level of 1.3 mg/L, and copper gets into drinking water mainly through corrosion of copper plumbing. But that number is a trigger for water systems, calculated across the 90th percentile of many homes, and exceeding it isn't even classified as a violation. It was never designed to tell one woman whether the water in her own kitchen had changed. On paper, nothing was wrong. In my dishwasher, something was.

That's what was eating my silverware.

When I finally got the three water reports together, I felt stupid.

Then I called another plumber. I actually think it was another water company. Either way I wanted somebody else to look at it, because at that point I'd been told I was imagining it for two years and I didn't fully trust myself to read a lab report.

Somewhere in the summer of 2025, while I was showing horses a couple times a month and sore in all the usual places, I heard that copper helps with inflammation. I was like, jackpot. Bought a bottle that week.

It worked for a little bit. Then it wasn't working at all.

Little did I know I was adding to a pile. My copper was already at 11.4 when I finally tested, well above the ideal range. I pulled the filtration system in October of 2025 and did my first hair sample test right after.

What Are the Symptoms of Copper Toxicity in Women?

Let me be specific about what it looked like in me, because vague symptom lists don't help anybody.

After the mold remediation in 2024, I would just lose it. Literally lose it. Road rage, chasing people down the road, yelling at people, firing people. There were nights I woke up so angry that I scared myself.

I'd always been a happy, easygoing person. That's the part I couldn't make sense of. I'd sit there and cry wondering if this was what my life was going to be now. And when I learned later how much minerals can have to do with mood, it broke my heart that I'd been that mean, and that nobody had thought to look.

Nobody had looked at my minerals.

Here's the wider picture. And I want to be upfront: not one of these belongs to copper by itself.

  • Mood that doesn't match you. Irritability, anger, anxiety, low mood that turns up without a reason attached to it.
  • Fatigue that sleep doesn't touch.
  • Brain fog. Losing words in the middle of a sentence.
  • Headaches, skin that won't settle, hair thinning or changing texture.
  • PMS that got worse over the years instead of better.
  • Trouble tolerating supplements that everybody else seems to feel great on.

Every one of those has other explanations. Thyroid. Iron. Sleep debt. Perimenopause. Plain exhaustion. A symptom list can't tell you which one you're looking at, and anybody who says otherwise is guessing. That's why this ran for two years in my own house without anybody catching it.

Women do seem to run into this pattern more than men, and hormones are part of the picture. Copper and estrogen influence one another, which is why the balance can shift around pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause.

Where Does Excess Copper Actually Come From?

Food is the easy source to see and it's rarely the troublemaker. Copper in food shows up in small amounts with the nutrients that keep it in proportion. The sources that pile up quietly are the ones nobody counts.

Water and plumbing. Copper pipe is standard in a lot of houses. When the water running through it turns corrosive, for whatever reason, copper comes with it. Test before and after any new filtration or softening system. I learned that one the expensive way.

Supplements. Copper is in most multivitamins and sold on its own, usually for inflammation or connective tissue. Mine is a good example of what happens when you take it without knowing which direction you're already running.

Cookware. Unlined copper and brass pass some into food, especially with anything acidic. Copper mugs are the common one, which is why licensed bars aren't supposed to serve Moscow mules in bare copper.

Two more things tip the balance without adding any copper at all. Long stretches of stress move nearly every mineral around. And low zinc, from low-protein weeks or a run of mostly refined food, lets copper drift up on its own.

Why Do Zinc and Copper Have to Be Read Together?

Zinc and copper use the same absorption pathway. Push a lot of one in, less of the other gets through. That's the design working.

So the ratio tells you more than either number does alone. Mine started at 1.49 against an ideal near 8. Nine months later it was 8.75, copper down from 11.4 to 3.2, zinc up from 17 to 28. Both of them moved. Neither one moved by itself.

Those are my numbers, from my body, on my timeline. They are not a target and they are not a benchmark. Somebody reading this could be sitting on the opposite side of the same seesaw and need the exact opposite adjustment. That's the whole reason I don't hand people a protocol.

Which is where the internet advice gets people in trouble. Take zinc to bring copper down has a kernel of truth in it, and zinc pushed hard enough and long enough will pull copper below where you need it. Low copper brings its own problems, including trouble getting iron into circulation. Watch both ends rather than shoving one down.

The other thing I had to be told: you bring copper down slowly. That came from one of my mentors when I did my first hair sample test. Copper dumping is real, she said, and we want to make it slow. That's practitioner teaching rather than settled science, and I'm telling you where it came from so you can weigh it accordingly. It's how I pace my own work. Mine took nine months on purpose.

What Does Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis Show That Blood Work Misses?

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a simple at-home hair sample test. A small amount of hair is cut close to the scalp and sent to a lab, which measures 37 elements: the vital minerals, additional elements, and the toxic ones.

What makes it useful for copper is the timeframe. Blood is regulated tightly, moment to moment, which is exactly what you want blood to do and what makes it a different kind of window. A hair sample reveals what your minerals have been doing over the last three to four months. Blood is a snapshot. Hair is a time-lapse.

It complements bloodwork rather than replacing it. There are questions blood answers better, and your doctor's panel is not the enemy here. They're two views of the same body.

A hair test also shows minerals next to each other with their ratios, so copper gets read against zinc instead of alone.

What it doesn't do is diagnose anything. It reveals patterns, and patterns are a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict.

What I'd tell you on a call is this. HTMA is a great place to start because it shows what's going on at a tissue level, and there are many different things that can affect copper. There are also other patterns that could lead to these same symptoms. So the whole picture gets looked at, not just one mineral.

What to Do If This Sounds Like You

  1. Find out what's in your water. A home test kit costs about what a supplement bottle does. If you have a filtration or softening system, test before and after it. This is the one I'd do first.
  2. Read the labels on what you're already taking. Note the amount of copper, and note the reason you started. If the reason is "somebody said it helps with inflammation," that was my reason too.
  3. Put copper and zinc on the same plate. Sprouted pumpkin seeds do both in one ingredient.
  4. Check inside your copper mugs. Lined with stainless or nickel, you're fine. Bare copper, keep the acidic things out.
  5. Get the pattern looked at before you change anything. This is what makes the other four worth doing, because it tells you which direction you're working in.

Pick one. Number one is the one most people can do this week.

What are the first signs of copper imbalance?

Mood and energy, before anything physical. That's how it went for me, and it's what the training material and case studies describe too. A shorter temper, anxiety that has a physical feel to it, fatigue that sleep doesn't resolve. Those tend to turn up before hair or skin changes do, and they're so easy to blame on stress that the pattern can run for years before anybody looks at minerals.

Can a blood test detect copper toxicity?

Blood tests measure copper in circulation, which your body regulates closely from moment to moment. That makes blood a reasonable tool for certain medical questions and a limited one for seeing slow accumulation in tissue. A hair sample covers a three to four month window instead, which is why the two tests can tell different stories about the same person. They work better together than either does alone.

Does taking zinc lower copper?

Zinc and copper compete for the same absorption pathway, so raising zinc intake does tend to bring copper down over time. The catch is that zinc taken hard enough and long enough can push copper below where you need it, and low copper causes its own problems. That's a reason to see both numbers before starting, rather than a reason to avoid zinc.

Can copper in tap water cause symptoms?

Copper in drinking water is a real and common source, particularly in homes with copper plumbing where the water has turned corrosive. Water can carry noticeably elevated copper while still sitting under the federal action level of 1.3 mg/L, partly because that threshold is a system-wide trigger rather than a limit for any one home. Testing your own tap is the only way to know what yours is doing.

Is copper toxicity the same as Wilson's disease?

No. Wilson's disease is a genetic condition that causes the body to accumulate copper in the liver and brain, and it's diagnosed and treated by physicians using specific medical testing. A mineral imbalance seen on a hair test is a different and far more common situation. If Wilson's disease is a concern in your family, that conversation belongs with your doctor.

How long does it take to bring copper down?

Longer than most people want, and slow is the point. We're going to move the needle slow, because you don't want copper dumping. My own took nine months and three tests to go from 11.4 into the ideal range, and the work was never aimed at copper by itself. Timelines vary and nobody can promise you one.

Where I Am Now

I still have moments of the anger, the depression, the anxiety. They're a lot more under control and I bounce back faster.

The last few months have been genuinely stressful and it showed up on my July test, which is what a hair test is supposed to do. I'm still happy with how those copper numbers moved.

None of this was a copper protocol. Pulling the filtration system was the biggest single thing. The rest was food, minerals chosen for the whole pattern instead of one number, and time. Mold and copper and stress were all tangled together in my case, and I'm not going to pin it on one thing. They're all patterns.
